News

This past weekend in San Diego saw 2011 Pokémon Video Game World Championships crowned after 3 days of intense battling. 11 year-old Brian Hough from Ann Arbor, MI is the 2011 Junior Division World Champion. (Way to go Brian!) He was interviewed on the Pokemon World Championships site where he provided keys to his victory.

Which Pokémon do you think helped you the most in battle?

The one I like the most is my Shiny Terrakion. It’s really cool and saved me in a match against a player in the Fourth Round, knocking out three Pokémon all by itself.

A new “Zoroark – Illusions Collection” box will be released this September for $11.99. Each box will come with a holo promo Zoroark card, a jumbo “3D” version of the same card, and three booster packs. The 3D card is apparently a new type of holofoil. Nintendo 3DS Price Drop Announced - $249.99 Down To $169.99

On Thursday, July 28th, Nintendo announced a price drop for the Nintendo 3Ds from it’s original price of $249.99 down to $169.99. The new price will be effective on August 12, 2011. If you have already purchased a 3DS, you will get 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop.

Personally, I like the Nintendo 3DS just not at $250! its new features are mostly gimmicky compared to competing products like tablets and smartphones. Face it, Apple is eating Nintendo’s market share at such a high rate that in order to compete the Big N would need to launch a new DS/Mobile device every 10-12 months. Actually, that would be just to keep up – not really compete. I think the 3DS should have launched at this price originally and probably closer to the holiday season so that there would be some real games available to play at launch. I have a hard time buying Nintendo’s claim when they say this:

Nintendo 3DS has the strongest software lineup of any video game system this holiday season and the new price now opens up the glasses-free 3D experience to many more consumers. Building on the popularity of The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D, which launched June 19, the upcoming game calendar is a Who’s Who of iconic video game franchises. Star Fox 64™ 3D arrives on Sept. 9, followed by Super Mario™ 3D Land in November, Mario Kart™ 7 in December and Kid Icarus™: Uprising during the holiday season.

That proves the point that the 3DS should have launched closer to the Holiday season. The impact that it would generate would have been much bigger! With all that said, I always remember to never underestimate Nintendo – they will always make it work out in the end!

So, what do you think of this sudden change in price? Does this new price drop make you want to (finally) buy the Nintendo 3DS?

Pokemon Best Wishes Movie Trailers

A correspondent in Japan, reporting for Pokebeach.com, named Gin, saw both Victini and the White Hero Reshiram and Victini and the Black Hero Zekrom today. Since both movies were basically the same, one summary is posted below, with any minor differences between the two movies stated along the way. You should head over to the Pokebeach.com post and read the full review but here’s a quick taste of what you can expect in the movies!

Dread, desperate to save the hometown of his ancestors, tries to explain that sometimes sacrifices must be made for important events such as this. As Victini suffers, it sends a vision to Ash of the final moments of the king’s life. The king, weakened and near death, tells Victini the Castle must never be moved again, as it would let the unhealthy, chaotic dragon pulse run amok and could potentially ruin the world. Ash watches as the king dies before Victini’s eyes. When the vision ends he shouts out the information he learned, then renews his frenzied attempts to destroy the ancient device draining Victini’s power, but is held immobile, then rendered unconscious by a psychic attack from Dread’s Pokemon.

Some of the differences in the movies:

  • The opening sequences.
  • Completely different soundtracks and composers for the entire duration of each movie.
  • The Pokemon who appear as background characters.
  • Dread’s psychic-type partner (Reinculus or Gothitelle).
  • Which Pokemon is Shiny (Janta’s Golurk or Karita’s Hydreigon)
  • The left and right fork in the road.
  • Cilan’s macaroon basket is red in White, and blue in Black.
  • Various scenes are mirrored.
  • Ash does gymnastics when the basement cave begins to break apart in White, but merely runs for his life in Black.
  • The battles between Reshiram and Zekrom are differently animated in each movie, using different attacks at different times in different ways.
  • Same goes for the Pikachu versus Dread’s psychic battles.
  • Key plot point macaroons changed colors in each movie. For example, in Black, the macaroon Ash throws at the ocean is pink, and in White, it was white.
  • Anything else we can’t think of at the moment ;) But lots of cute little differences besides the bigger obvious ones!

New Pokemon Game Coming to the iPhone App Store

News out of Japan is mentioning that Nintendo is preparing a Pokemon game, Pokemon Say Tap, for the Apple App Store (iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch) and possibly the Android Market too. While this is not the first time Pokemon have been another platform (Hello, PC Pokemon games) this will be the first time EVER that Nintendo is making a game for a competing portable platform. I’m all for it! Apple has sold more iOS devices than the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP combined. That’s an amazing stat right there!

Details of the game are still coming in but so far we know that it will be available this Summer for free. It is a rhythm-based game that will use specific music from the Pokemon Black & White TV series

The TCG is going old school! Could this be a Generation III remake hint, especially since the set is being released in September?

Information has surfaced regarding the third Black & White sets – Psycho Drive and Hail Blizzard – which will be released in Japan on September 16th. It looks like the sets will be bringing back Pokemon-ex, though they may be different than before.

  • Pokemon-EX will appear in these sets. However, they might be a different mechanic than the old Pokemon-ex: according to the set’s product sheet, the term “EX” will be pronounced differently than in the original sets, which may mean they are meant to be something different. Additionally, the new “EX” is capitalized whereas the old “ex” was lowercased. Still, Pokemon will have the “EX” in their names (Reshiram EX and Zekrom EX), so they’ll probably be the same, if not a spiritual successor.
  • Pokemon from every generation will appear in both sets. Confirmed so far are Scrafty, Pikachu, Lucario, Bisharp, Cinccino, and Meowth (in addition to Mewtwo and Kyurem from the other day).

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Game Review

by Pokémaster on June 22, 2011

Finally, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is now available for the Nintendo 3DS! Does it do the original version justice and more importantly is this the MUST HAVE game for your 3DS? Well, Andrew Gray over at WiisWorld.com has reviewed the new game and he gives it high marks:

Probably the greatest area of improvement in the 3DS version is the visual presentation. Though the game’s actual geography remains the same, the entire world of Hyrule has been redone not only in 3D, but also with redesigned graphics and details. Character models look the closest players have seen in years to what is in the actual Zelda concept art and nearly all of the blocky and jagged polygons have been entirely eliminated. The draw distance is far better, and the frame rate stays smooth as butter, a welcome relief to the hiccups present in the earlier versions. There are no pauses before going into the inventory screens and players will want to explore as many areas as possible in order to see the wealth of details that developer Grezzo has added to the game. From a bustling Hyrule Marketplace, to a more elaborate Temple of Time, one can tell that a lot of love was put into the visual design. The 3D effect is also the first time this reviewer actually thought the game looked better with it on a 3DS, as opposed to the window dressing and simple effects on other 3DS titles.
