What other characters should get their own theme parks?.
If you were to base a theme park ride on a videogames character, Miles Edgeworth probably wouldn’t be the first name on your list but the Ace Attorney is getting his own attraction in Sega’s Joypolis theme park in Japan.

With all the hoopla and harrumphing about the AKIRA remake, it was easy to miss that other anime that’s gearing up to become a live action international production (and by international, I mean that no less than six countries across four continents are involved.) According to Bleeding Cool (by way of Screen Daily,) BUBBLEGUM CRISIS: KNIGHT SABERS has just got itself a director in the personage of Anthony LaMolinara, a talent with some significant experience in animation and visual effects. The plan is to shoot this puppy (sorry for the mental image) with 3D (!) cameras in China next spring.
I’m actually a little surprised that they kept the title, as I always thought a brand with a metaphor likening urban tension to chewing candy was a wee…. obtuse.
There’s no word on whether this’ll be based on the original OVA or any of the sequels or spin-offs that followed it. I’m just hopping they bring along the cyborg with the freaky tongue fetish – - though such peculiarities might be too odd for the elusive “mass audience.”
You look at the trailer below and the good-girl-mecha-with-the-signficant-nods-to-BLADE-RUNNER seems like it’d make for an easy transition to action of the live variety (although I doubt the soundtrack will be as blatantly “inspired” by STREETS OF FIRE’s…)
You know, BUBBLEGUM CRISIS doesn’t get talked about as much as other titles in the hallowed annals of anime – - certainly not as much as AKIRA. Do we have any fans of this kind of girly cyberpunk amongst you lunatics? Does it still hold up in your highly-discerning opinions?

I am such a complete sucker for shoujo. Even a glimpse of the art can tell me whether or not I am going to fall in love with a story. I have not read High School Debut (although Viz published it here in the US, so maybe I can hunt it down), but the moment I saw that art you see above, I knew I was going to fall head over heels in love with it.
The popular manga, which originally ran in Bessatsu Margaret from 2003 to 2008, tells the story of a girl named Haruna who hires a boy to help her makeover her image from a tomboy to a softer, girlier image so she can get a boyfriend. The catch is that he can’t fall in love with her, which of course, he’s destined to do. God, I love shoujo and all it’s irrationality!
Anyway, ANN reports that Bessatsu Margaret has just reported a live action series is in the works based on the manga. No hard details are available yet, but I bet it’s goign to be GOOD. Anyway, fans of Kimi Ni Todoke should probably check this one out.

I thought I had seen the vast majority of most Studio Ghibli projects, but it seems I missed out on one: Omohide Poro Poro, or Only Yesterday as it is known in English. The film has been released in the UK and Australia, but still has not been picked up by Disney for a release in the US. It tells the story of a woman named Taeko as she makes a journey into the countryside and remembers her past. Sounds like perfect Ghibli material — I can see myself tearing up already.
Anyway, the film has been adapted into a musical which will run at Tokyo’s Ginga Gekijō theater from April 16 to 29, 2011. This marks the first Ghibli film to be adapted into any sort of stage production. After it finishes its run at this location, it will move to Semboku City in the northern prefecture of Akita from May 8, 2011 to January 3, 2012 and then it will go on a national tour. I wish I could go see it! I bet it’s wonderful.

ANN reported today that Shohei Manabe’s manga series Ushijima the Loan Shark will be getting a live-action adaption as of October. No cast members have been confirmed yet, but the show will run during a late night slot (not a surprise since the content of the manga is fairly dark to begin with).
The story is about the black market as seen through the eyes of loan shark Yamikin Ushijima-kun. At a glance, the character reminds me very much of Genji from Crows Zero — I wonder if they might consider tapping the same actor for the role?

I don’t know why, but when either a cute boy or a cute girl puts on glasses, somehow they just get cuter. I guess I have a glasses fetish? That makes the announcement of manga-turned-anime Megane no Kanojo perfect for me. Originally an omnibus of separate stories about different types of glasses-wearing girls which ran in Yahoo! Comics’ online anthology, the brand new anime adaption will be launching this November.
The series will consist of a four episode OVA and come from anime studio AIC Takarazuka, with Koji Ito (Geisters – Fractions of the Earth) directing. I’m interested because it looks kind of cute, but we;ll have to see how it turns out. What do you think?

This just proves you have to be careful when it comes to how and what you draw. According to ANN, Kodansha is being fined 550,000 yen (roughly ,300 US) because they used a photo of a real person as a basis for a likeness drawn in the October 21st edition of Zero-sen, a manga currently running in the Weekly Shonen Magazine.
The character drawn was labeled as the leader of a VIP car gang called Oraora. The plantiff actually runs a real-life company that sells clothing in the Oraora-kei style, which is a fashion movement that features looks like highly stylized hair and sunglasses. I bet he had no trouble spotting himself!
Lesson learned, kids — Don’t copy out of magazines. Use your imagination! (or have a lot of money handy to pay off your court costs).

Everyone knows Osamu Tezuka, since the guy’s actually referred to as the “god” of manga and everything. But he’s made some things that were slightly less popular than Astro Boy. One of them being the story of Unico, a little unicorn who has the ability to spread happiness. No kidding, just look at him!
We got word from ANN this morning that a Japanese television to cell phone service called BeeTV will be streaming what they call a “movie comic” of the classic manga, which will add color, spoken dialogue, sound effects, and special effects. Neat! (Or you could just watch the animated film of the same name. But not on your phone!) Voice actress Nana Mizuki will play several roles in the new adaption, which will come out on August 1st.
Of course, this news is useless for those of us not living in Japan, but hey, we can read it and wish that we lived there instead of here. I mean, we all do that anyway on a daily basis, so why stop now?

I admit I have never read a single page of Yūki Hayashi’s , but hearing over at ANN that it was being turned into a streaming web movie actually did pique my interest. This Saturday the second volume of the manag will be released in Japan, and to celebrate, Shueisha’s Young Jump website will host an original four minute movie, which features characters Tatsuya Tachikawa and Gonzaburō Fudō ( Tatsuya is an archery student and Gonzaburō is a new transfer student).
It seems there will be a second anime (also short in format) streaming on July 30th as well. I’ve actually never read any manga set against an archery background — I think it sounds pretty interesting. Plus, if you’ve seen even on harem anime, you can’t help but think that bow would come in handy for shooting a hopeless mail chaarcter. The Keitaros of the world better watch their back – -a lady with a bow is a dangerous thing!
