I admit I have never read a single page of Yūki Hayashi’s , but hearing over at ANN that it was being turned into a streaming web movie actually did pique my interest. This Saturday the second volume of the manag will be released in Japan, and to celebrate, Shueisha’s Young Jump website will host an original four minute movie, which features characters Tatsuya Tachikawa and Gonzaburō Fudō ( Tatsuya is an archery student and Gonzaburō is a new transfer student).
It seems there will be a second anime (also short in format) streaming on July 30th as well. I’ve actually never read any manga set against an archery background — I think it sounds pretty interesting. Plus, if you’ve seen even on harem anime, you can’t help but think that bow would come in handy for shooting a hopeless mail chaarcter. The Keitaros of the world better watch their back – -a lady with a bow is a dangerous thing!
In case you don’t already know, Doraemon is kind of a big deal in Japan. The beloved franchise has been around since the late sixties, and you can buy everything from Doraemon t shirts to Doraemon vibrators if you make your way over to the land of the rising sun. Think I’m making that up? Think again…
The new film, due out in 2011, is called Doraemon: Shin Nobita to Tetsujin Heidan ~ Habatake Tenshi-tachi~ and is actually a remake of a previous Doraemon film called Nobita and the Platoon of Iron Men. To check out the trailer, go to the official site and click the rotating blue icon on the right hand side of the page. I’m a sucker for anything Doraemon-related, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for it after it comes out. Ever seen a Doraemon film, or are they too child-oriented to catch your interest?

Am I the guilt-riddled pretty boy swordsman of your dreams?
The oft-salacious blog Sankaku Complex set aside their normal discussion of 2ch exhibitionists and the latest bonkers loli news (not a dig at the blog, I honestly love the place) to report today that, according to a Japanese studio insiders, not only is a live-action Rurouni Kenshin movie in the works, it’s going to star Takeru Sato. The actor–barely 21-years-old and really making me feel my age–is best known for his roles as Yuya Okada in Rookies, the movie Goemon and the titular role in Kamen Rider Den-O, and has held a handful of other dramatic roles as well.
The news comes from Japanese blog Cyzo Woman (Japanese language page), which says that studios finds the CG technology advanced enough now to do justice to the source material. While I agree that the tech infrastructure is there for the film, I believe it was actually in place several years ago, making me wonder if this is really the reason studios have waited this long to propose a live-action film. You know what, I’m not going to get to cynical on this one and just be happy that this might be materializing now. While I don’t think a movie at this late stage of the game would advance the broader story of Kenshin I do know that samurai period films are awesome and fans of the genre should all be rooting for this to be made.
