 No, Korra, don’t jump! You have to teach me what routine you use for those fabulous shoulders first!

We and every other reviewer out there have beaten the ever living hell out of the cinematic incompetence that is M. Night Shyamalan‘s The Last Airbender already, so I won’t tie that mess into this news except to say that we know for sure now that at least there’s a future for the animated side of that franchise. Nickelodeon announced yesterday that Avatar: The Last Airbender will get a sequel and it will be helmed by the show’s creators, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

The show’s working title is The Legend of Korra and is intended as a direct sequel (no alternate timelines or anything) seventy years after the events of the first series and…

…follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern “Avatar” world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.    

Awesome news for fans of the series as well as quality animation as a whole. The new series won’t be ready for broadcast until sometime in 2011, but I say take your time and wait until it’s a work to be proud of.
