Watch & Learn: FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST BROTHERHOOD #15

He’s like FMA’s answer to Popeye’s friend, Wimpy.

A little change of place for you lunatics… a Watch & Learn, conducted from a plane!

Maybe I’m jumping to some wild conclusions, but I’ve got a hunch that this episode just might correspond to the beginning of a new volume in the manga. The time jump… the new characters… the new intros and outros… I don’t know, somehow, the clues are just adding up.

Speaking of the new theme songs, I still prefer the original ones, but maybe these’ll grow on me; maybe the jingles will get stuck in my head. I’m not sure what to make of the panda patrol, either, but those are probably going to be famous last words, won’t they? Flash-forward a couple weeks and I’ll have their figurines crowded all over my desk and their scrolls decorating all my walls.

I continue to be a little… befuddled by the setting of this show. Initially, it seemed like they were going for an alternate history with one-to-one analogs. For damn sure, it looked like the alchemical kids were in Austria or one the pre-unification Germanic states. The kids looked German, their names sounded German, their city had German architecture… and, most telling of all, their boss’ title was “fuhrer.”

Then, some of you insisted that this was supposed to be England, and that didn’t seem right at all. They show their world map in this one and it looks like Conan’s Hyperborean Age by way of the Magical Land of Oz so, after some careful analysis and reasoned hypotheses,  I concluded that this is full-out fantasy. Then…  they introduce all these people of Xing, which is obviously supposed to be China… so I’m just going to give up on trying to figure this out. The creators’ mind seem to keep changing, oh so capriciously.

Anyway, the prince’s dilemma in this episode’s actually a pretty interesting one. While they may be going willy nilly about geography, regal succession disputes are something hewn a little closer to reality than the usual neat-and-tidy royal families you usually see in fantasy. I did get a lot of enjoyment out seeing Edward just sock the Lin Yao as soon as they met again. There’s nothing more irritating then somebody who scams out of a bill – - especially if they can damn well afford it.

Watch & Learn: COWBOY BEBOP #14

by Pokémaster on October 5, 2010

So many shenanigans going in such a small spaceship.
So many shenanigans going in such a small spaceship.

Now, this is the probably the most inspired idea I’ve seen throughout the entirety of COWBOY BEBOP. A crime wave perpetrated by a mob of random working stiffs who’ve ordered do-it-yourself burglary kits from a corporation’s print ad? Even without the added twist of the bounty only applying to the ring leader (not the individual perps) that’s still a conceit that’s seriously strong enough to sustain a feature of its own. I’m actually a little disappointed that it’s been wrapped up so quickly. I would’ve preferred that this be the continuing sub-plot instead of all the middling intrigue with Vicious. There’s so much potential for wild satire.

But it’s done… c’est le anime.

Figuring out what the song-homage titles have referred to has been easy up until this point… but I’m really scratching my head over how “Bohemian Rhapsody” is supposed to apply to this one. “Toys in the Attic” obviously referred to the monster in the Bebop’s neglected storage space. But for this one? I suppose you could describe the crime wave as a rhapsody, but that’s a bit of a stretch. But the who are the bohemians? Though they’re certainly motley crew, the Bebop’s bounty hunters are a wee too profit-driven to be a described as such; as are the weekend felons. Has this been debated ad nausem by the fans? Am I missing something here?

In lieu of that, I’d be remiss not to include that other melding of Queen and anime. The one where the connections are a little more obvious…

There’s 26 episodes in this show, so I’m officially past the halfway point, now. I suppose what really sticks out to me is how much of pop culture potpourri this is; what with all the references to music and action flicks. I suspect that’s something that other shows have picked up and run with in a much more in-your-face way since the show debuted, though (FLCL, et al.) Is that this show’s specific legacy, or were there other multi-media hodgepodges that preceded this?

Watch & Learn: FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST BROTHERHOOD #14

by Pokémaster on October 5, 2010

I&squot;m sorry, but it&squot;s ridiculous that this guy&squot;s title is actually "the fuhrer."
I'm sorry, but it's ridiculous that this guy's title is actually “the fuhrer.”

Let this be a demonstration of the value of persistence. I stopped watching FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: BROTHERHOOD for this column back in August because I got to the end of the DVD sampler I’d been given.  Since I wasn’t especially enamored with the show and I really didn’t want to watch the rest of the series – - all 50 odd episodes of it – - on subbed You Tube streamers, I opted to start watching COWBOY BEBOP instead. Many of you were horrified over this turn of events.

“But… but… but you’re stopping when it’s just getting good!” you wailed in desperation.

I’ve been bugged about this, on-and-off, for the past month and half. SamJaz was definitely the most vocal out of the bunch. He got me to finally acquiesce. We’ll see how long this’ll go for. I’m not making guarantees. I’d really prefer to watch anime on my DVD player while lying on my couch… not while I’m hunched over the same computer I work at all day. So, you can start making bets on how long I’ll last.

Now, about the episode…

My first thought is that watching this subbed after 13 dubbed episodes really makes me think of SNK fighters. It’s some elusive combination of power moves and guttural Japanese intonation. Go figure.

And I still remember what lurks underneath that loincloth.
And I still remember what lurks underneath that loincloth.

I didn’t have much trouble picking up after the cliffhanger from last episode. Al getting hijacked by a goon whose walking around inside him – - a goon who gets maimed into a squirting, bloody mess while still inside him – - is one of those wonderfully wicked moments of surrealism that I rarely find outside of anime.

So the fuhrer (I still can’t believe they insist on calling him that) is actually one of the homunculi, huh? Definitely couldn’t have called that. The reveal of that oroboros in his uncovered eye was a gasp-inducer. It certainly makes the conspiracy a lot more interesting. I can see now why everybody was wailing about the show getting good with this episode. I’ll say, though… once I knew that he was a sin, I pegged him as Wrath. He didn’t seem ostentatious enough to be Pride, you know?

Watching him put the high holy hurt on Greed throughout this episode was wickedly entertaining, too. Oh boy, the gimp had it coming!

Minimal super-deformity… basically no slapstick… higher amounts of intrigue… a greater density of brutal fights… alright, you lunatics, I’m hooked again. Bring on episode #15.

Watch this episode, “Those Who Lurk” below, make your own decision and then read my comments on the previous episode, from all the way back, right here.

Watch & Learn: COWBOY BEBOP #13

Vicious' appearance is less a warning of danger than it is of befuddlement.
Vicious’ appearance is less a warning of danger than it is of befuddlement.

Before anything else, I’m going to bring up something my roommate mentioned (since he watched this show in college.) So there’s some theory among fans that everything after “Toys in the Attic” is either a dream or some paradisiacal vision from the afterlife – - because the crew all died after their encounter with that monster?!?! Good lord, that sounds stupid. I don’t see it myself, yet, and I don’t know why people have such a fascination with interpreting a story in this way, in general. It basically invalidates all the drama you’ve watched. It’s like how a lot of my friends got so caught up in whether the ending of INCEPTION proved that everything was a dream. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t – - the spinning top was meant to be ambiguous – - but I was a lot less interested in discussing that junk than I was in what the movie had to say about meme theory.

I digress, I know. The message of that diatribe is that I really hope there isn’t any substance to “post-’Toys in the Attic’ dream” discussion, because it’d really take COWBOY BEBOP down a peg in my eyes.

Actually, seeing as how I said “ambiguous” back there, I’ll mention that I, once again, had trouble following what was going on in this episode. None-too-coincidentally, the last time I had that problem with this show was the last time Vicious showed up. I get the feeling I’m going to appreciate this the same way I appreciated the X-FILES – - that is, I’ll vastly prefer the “perp of the week” episodes over the “mythology” ones. See, I’ve thought about this episode for a bit and I’m still not entirely clear on why or how that androgynous jazz man had big ol’ boobies, or how that plasique bomb briefcase of his just came out of nowhere. Again, I was focusing on stuff I enjoyed… like Ed’s food game with Ein and the odd Sting sound-alike they got for the soundtrack and the fact that Jet’s voice actor sounds kind of like a sitcom Dad.

Watch & Learn: COWBOY BEBOP #12

Go on and wave that big gun you, Spike, you big softie!
Go on and wave that big gun you, Spike, you big softie!

Awwww… even suave Mr. Cool Spike Spiegel has his tender spot. He probably would’ve chided Jet for getting all bent out of shape over his ex in episode #10 and, now, here he is, going off the deep end about this Julia; the one that got away.   I’m usually not one to criticize a show for detailing every little bad experience the characters have had – - I’d rather have broadly-drawn caricatures than schmaltzy sympathy-seekers – - but, man, this cast really needed some fleshing out for me to care enough to want to continue watching. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I’ve been enjoying this show that much more lately… since they’ve been getting more into these goons’ backstories lately. On that note, considering how disinterested I was over the last episode Vicious appeared in, it speaks to the importance of character development and context that I actually enjoyed his re-appearance here.

And by the way, aside from Faye ganking the Bebop’s safe, is her departure really that much of a loss for the crew? Maybe I wasn’t paying attention close enough attention, but I can’t seem to recall why they even let her tag along with them in the first place. All she’s seemed to do since then is gripe and con these guys out of one thing or another (thankfully it wasn’t Jet’s clothes this time.)  And, even with her dangerous curves and skimpy outfits, neither of these guys seem attracted to her enough to keep her around for that sort of reason. Am I missing something important?

Edward, on the other hand, is quickly becoming my favorite character on this show (and not for the reasons Lemon put in my head last episode.) I don’t know what it is… it’d be so easy for her to become the kind of annoying kid that ruins shows… but I find her endlessly endearing. Maybe it’s because she’s kind of “spaz savant” in this universe’s very-90s vision of cyberspace?

Anyway, this episode was called “Jupiter Jazz Part 1.” Read my comments on the previous episode here.

Watch & Learn: COWBOY BEBOP #11 SPECIAL VIDEO EDITION

by Pokémaster on September 30, 2010

Do you figure Edward could defeat THIS alien intruder as easily she did the one in this episode?
Do you figure Edward could defeat THIS alien intruder as easily she did the one in this episode?

This show just keeps getting better. I’m so pleased that COWBOY BEBOP’s expanding its focus. Last episode had more emotional depth and this one harped one the hard lessons we all have to learn sometime in our lives. Harmless entertainment is all well and good, but you truly have to appreciate a show that tackles real, topical issues in such an unflinching way.   Problems that affect all of us… the young and old, the rich and the poor, the meek and mighty… and lessons that everyone should apply to their own lives.

That message, of course, is…

DON’T LET STUFF SIT IN THE FRIDGE!

I’d put an addendum on that and say that you should never trust unsealed food from a street vendor, either. No matter how tasty it smells. I had what you might call a very… colorful experience with food poisoning about a year ago after I got some grub from a taco stand.  So I could relate, quite viscerally, to the bodily horrors that the Bebop’s crew went through in this episode.

This ain&squot;t no "heavy metal queen" here either.
This ain't no “heavy metal queen” here either.

I might’ve missed whatever movie homages were in the last episode, but if you can’t see the strong tributes to the ALIEN trilogy here, then you need to run over to your video store or your library or your Netflix account immediately and watch the box set. Of course, no ALIEN movie ended with a punchline like  this did. All that terror, all that infection… and Edward just eats the monster like it’s jello. Ay-oh! I hope she brings box of matches with her when she goes to the john tomorrow.

As a special treat, in lieu of this show being streamed online, I figured I’d show you Anime Vice lunatics what my “viewing experience” is like. Just to make it even more bizarre, Whiskey’s superstar intern, Lemon, has invaded my thoughts and taken over as the voice of my head for this video. It’s sort of like I’m his conduit… brace yourself…
